Faculty
The Department faculty’s research and teaching interests address a variety of critical social questions and scholarly concerns. Our work moves between and across the social sciences and humanities: a number of faculty members are situated in the traditional disciplines, while others are substantively interdisciplinary and/or “transdisciplinary” in their research methods and scholarly practices. Collectively, we examine politics, history, and culture in their diverse manifestations, including social and cultural movements, grass-roots activism, community organizing, radical and revolutionary struggles, artistic innovations (especially music, dance, performance, cinema, and literature), and other socially engaged forms of intellectual production.
Our faculty trains undergraduate and graduate students in a variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary methodologies, including archival research, ethnography, oral history, literary criticism, social and cultural theory, and policy analysis. Our faculty members hold Ph.D.’s in Ethnic Studies, American Culture, African American Studies, History, Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science, Education, Law, and Modern Thought and Literature. They have conducted research not only across the United States, but also in Bolivia, Mexico, Cuba, Spain, the Basque Country, Great Britain, Sweden, Korea, and the Philippines, and have been selected as research and/or postdoctoral fellows by the Ford Foundation, National Research Council, Mellon Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, Social Science Research Council, the UCLA Institute of American Cultures, UC Office of the President, UC Humanities Research Institute, the Bancroft Library, and the Huntington Library, among other institutions and foundations.
